These narratives are collected to confront the erasure of trans lives and to record diverse histories of gender as intersecting with race and racism, poverty, dis/ability, aging, housing migration, sexism, and the AIDS crisis. Once upon a time, you would have been hard-pressed to find any memoir that openly explored sexual identity or the lived experiences of sexual and gender minorities.
Today we’re grateful to see bookshelves lined with autobiographical gems by LGBTQ+ authors. Drawing from narratives of youth who live outside of the normative structures of sexuality, we weave a tapestry of stories to highlight the challenges and struggles, as well as the strengths and protective factors, of LGBTQIAP+ youth. Gay literature is a collective term for literature produced by or for the gay community which involves characters, plot lines, and/or themes portraying male homosexual behavior.
[1][2] Because the social acceptance of homosexuality has varied in many world cultures throughout history, LGBT literature has covered a vast array of themes and concepts.
Gay stories are important in changing how we view the world. They make us see the LGBTQ+ community in a new light.
